After another slow, delicious breakfast at our Airbnb, we drove down to the beach to check the wind for kiting. Sadly, it wasn’t quite strong enough, so instead we enjoyed a gentle walk along the shoreline. Early mornings on the beach here always feel calm and unhurried, the kind of quiet that makes you soften into the day.

A quick coffee back at https://wapalapam.com/rounded off the morning before we headed back for one last swim in the Airbnb pool. A final float in the sunshine, then time to pack up and make our way to Flic en Flac for the next part of our trip.

Arriving at Maison Tropical

Maison Tropical sits on a normal street, but stepping inside feels like discovering a hidden oasis. It reminded me instantly of Moroccan riads—tropical greenery, carved wood, lanterns, colour, texture, and cool pockets of shade.

Polina, our host, welcomed us with such infectious enthusiasm. She proudly told us the stories behind the furniture, all handmade by local craftsmen. The framed shells and artefacts around the house were collected by her Portuguese husband, Joao. Every detail feels personal, considered, and authentically Mauritian.

The welcome touches were next-level:

A bottle of local beer in the fridge Homemade coconut cakes. A bottle of Mauritian rum Beautiful décor in every corner.

Even the garden has surprises—giant tortoises wander freely, and at night flying foxes glide through the trees above the pool. Magical.

Dinner by the Beach

The beach is just a ten-minute walk away. Being the weekend, the whole stretch was alive with Mauritian families setting up sound systems and full outdoor kitchens for huge group picnics. The atmosphere was joyful and full of energy. We enjoyed watching the sun set and listening to local lads playing a traditional rhythm on drums.

We had a simple grilled fish and prawn supper, fresh and perfect, before strolling back to Maison Tropical for a relaxed evening and a final glass of rum.
