A Slower Start & Cycling the Coast

After the rush of getting away and the slightly chaotic start to the trip, we let ourselves have a slower morning. A proper lie-in, catching up on sleep, and an unhurried breakfast out — exactly what was needed. No alarms, no pressure, just easing into the day.

Eventually, we picked up Lime bikes and headed west along the coast towards Saint-Laurent-du-Var. Years ago, when Ed’s mum had a small boat there, we used to spend time in the area, so it felt quite nostalgic heading back. It’s changed — definitely smarter and more developed — but still recognisable, and nice to see it looking so well.

The ride itself was one of those simple highlights that ends up being a favourite part of the trip. Proper cycle paths the whole way, the sea right beside you, and just an easy, steady pace. It’s such a good way to see this stretch of coastline.

Using the Lime bikes turned out to be one of the easiest ways to get around. You unlock them through the app, pick them up pretty much anywhere, and leave them in designated zones across the city. They’re ideal for this kind of coastal exploring — especially with the proper cycle paths — but it’s worth keeping an eye on the cost as it adds up quicker than you think if you’re out for a few hours.

For us, it was more about the freedom and the experience than the cheapest option.

We looped back through Nice and carried on towards Villefranche-sur-Mer for a quick stop. Not a full explore this time, just enough to take in the view — the bay, the colours, that soft Riviera light. Even briefly, it’s one of those places that always feels a bit special.

From there, we headed back towards the port in Nice, ready for something to eat, and ended up at Marechiaro. A lively, slightly chaotic spot right by the water, tun by staff fron Naples, full of people and atmosphere, and exactly what we were after. Fresh fish dishes, speaking Italian and French.

Back at the hotel, it was time for a bit of downtime. We went to the beach for a swim in the sea— I took one dip of my toe in the water and decided against it. Far too cold for me, so I stayed firmly on dry land before heading up for a shower and before a rest for Ed and a little trip out for me.

I went for a little wander and a bit of browsing around the shops, and stumbled across Olive et Artichaut, which I had read about. I booked it for later for dinner.

Their menu is seasonal and short and very tasty. Good value, and the open kitchen makes it interesting.
