🌴 Mauritius – Day Three: South Coast Roads, Seafood Lunch & A Night at The Goofy Gecko

Day three began with a bit of excitement — our hire car arriving right at the B&B, delivered by WST Car Hire exactly on time. They handed over a bright orange Suzuki S-Presso, tiny, cheerful, and perfect for zipping around the island. After a quick run-through of the basics, we packed up our bags, loaded the boot, and set off towards the south coast.

đźš— A Detour to a Hidden Beach

Before joining the main coastal road, we took a small detour near the airport down to a quiet local beach, bordering 2 large resorts. It was an unexpected discovery — a bit of surf, powdery sand, and a few families cooling off under the trees and swimming in the water. The breeze was warm, the sky bright, and it felt like the perfect little pause before a day of exploring.

🏞️ South Coast Views & Le Morne

Back on the road, we headed south through open countryside, long stretches of sugarcane swaying on both sides. At one point we pulled up at a popular viewpoint overlooking Le Morne Mountain — and it really does stop you in your tracks. The mountain rises so sharply and dramatically from the flat coastline, with the reef and the bright turquoise lagoon stretching out below it. A proper postcard moment.

🍽️ Lunch at Wapalapam, Le Morne

We continued down to Le Morne for lunch at Wapalapam, tucked under the trees near the beach. It has a relaxed, beachy feel — colourful, friendly, and full of good smells from the kitchen.

Lunch was excellent:

  • Seafood pasta for me — rich, fresh, and full of flavour.
  • Seafood noodle soup for Ed — steaming, aromatic, and perfect after a morning on the road.

🏡 A Night at The Goofy Gecko, La Gaulette

From Le Morne we carried on to La Gaulette, a small coastal village that’s become a favourite with surfers and kiteboarders. We’d booked an overnight stay at The Goofy Gecko, a converted shipping-container apartment, and it was even nicer than expected — bright, modern, compact, and with a peaceful little pool area.

We arrived, unpacked, and went straight for a swim, followed by an hour or two just lounging by the pool. After a day on the road, it felt good to stop and just soak up the late-afternoon calm.

🌅 Dinner at The Chaser

As evening settled in, we watched the sky change colours then we headed out to The Chaser, a local restaurant only a short walk away.

Dinner was easy-going and delicious, with generous portions and friendly service — the kind of laid-back evening that suits the pace of life here so well.
